[Cantonese lecture] Hardfork 19

in #cantonese8 years ago

I think all of us have heard of the HF 19 coming into effect very soon. But do you know 19 has a very special meaning in Cantonese?

19 is very similar to the pronounciation of 濕鳩 in Cantonese (Pronounciation: sup gou). 濕 means wet or something not important (濕碎) and 鳩 is a foul language meaning penis or stupid. Combining these two words, 濕鳩 means someone stupid and not important but thought himself as a valuable and important person. Nowadays people don't really care the original meaning of this word, rather they will simply use it to call something is stupid or bad. For example, 19 hardfork means a hardfork which is stupid and bad.

So is the upcoming hardfork 19? Let's see! ;)

This is fun lol. Would you consider writing more posts about other Cantonese slang? I think Cantonese slang (or some foul language) have interesting cultural background and some of them can be used as verbs, nouns, adjectives and adverbs, which would be fun to talk about (if talking abt foul languages is considered to be proper lol).

Fairly interesting translation!
