The Nissan Micra was one of the top contenders for the Wheels Car of the Year award and with its relatively decent all around statistics and good price, it’s not hard to see why!
The Car
It comes as a 1.2 three-cylinder and a 1.5 four-cylinder and with a fair amount of equipment as standard, such as manual air conditioning, cruise control, button controls on the steering wheel, a four-speaker sound system, as well as the standard Bluetooth, USB, AUX and audio streaming connectivity. All the Micra options across the range also come with power steering and option for the CVT auto.
The Micra sits on 14 inch steel wheels, black exterior door handles, and cloth upholstery. Moing up the range, the Ti will get you foglights, a roof spoiler and soft-touch interior panels as well as 15 inch alloy wheels to boot. There are also six airbags 2 in the front, at the sides and at the curtains as well as electronic stability control, and that bags the Nissan Micra four-stars on the ANCAP safety rating
The Drive
The Micra gives you a surprisingly high seat considering its size and that good visibility coupled with a tiny turning circle, and light controls, you can’t get much better than that from a tiny car like the Micra. The steering wheel can’t be adjusted muc, but the basic hydraulic steering gives you enough confidence and weightage even when you’re on the highway.
But being such a light car, it’s not surprising that every little bump and pebble can be felt and the drive can be quite interrupted when that happens. Turning corners and wind tend to blow the car around a little and the little engine strains to get you the torque that you’ll need. In fact you’ll find yourself flooring the accelerator more often than not, especially where terrain and upslopes are concerned.
The Interior
The Micra is not set to be a luxurious car, so don’t expect too much from the interior. It’s pretty modern enough, but lacks a number of items that you would find in a car in this day and age. That includes, USB input, seat height adjustment, steering reach, and headrest adjustments. But that said, you can do without these without too much of a fuss since the seats themselves are quite comfortable, with lots of light and space and not too much of a crap for our legs and shoulders (as long as you don’t try to squeeze a third in the back).
The boot unfortunately suffers with only 251 litres of capacity and that’s because the split fold back seats aren’t included in the base trim – you’re going to have to pay for it if you need more storage. There are enough cubbies in the cabin, but barely enough to really lug anything big.
Overall
Not much to complain about here with the Nissan Micra to be honest. We liked that it ranked pretty averagely on all the important things and it’s quiet enough and economic enough for you to consider without having to break the bank on a new car loan too!
