Painting Aluminum car rims - The rim job guide!

in #cars4 years ago

Good morning. I decided to paint some car rims.. cause i have nothing else to do 😅

When painting aluminum or galvanised metals.. you need a special prime for that purpose. dont use the normal primer for car painting. (the usuall gray one)

You need an two component primer. Component A and B. the ratio for aluminums is usually 4:1. 4A mixed with 1B. and of course according to the manufacturer instructions use the recommended thinner to dilute it. 40-60%. For spray guns.

The primer color is semi transparent yellowish. the rims will look like this.20200627_090113.jpg

use a decent gun for spraying. with no more than 2 bar on your regulator.
the photo shows 2.2 bar.. but from 15 meter hose.. it drops arround 2 bars in the tip of the gun.

The flg5 devil biss gun is the best value for money out there. mine is with 1.8mm nozzle but it has smaller too. But with the 1.8 for a diy guy it can produce amazing result from priming to finishing.

The other guns in my armoy is the sata 5000. and the devilbiss gti pro. Sata with 1.4 nozzle. and the gti pro with 1.2 and 1.3. But for an old car rim job 🤣 the flg5 is more than enough.

Apply two coats of primer. thin ones. It doesnt need sanding. leave 12 hours between coats. After that. Go with 2k black paint. 1 coat of very thin layer.. like a powder coating. and after 1 hour (if its on direct sunlight) and apply the second coat thicker.

General instructions for outsise painting. For car booth painting the rules are very different and more precice. Whatever you would like to ask. post it below.20200627_102150.jpg
