Why do cats refuse to eat from a half-empty plate ❓
If your pet eats straight from the middle of the bowl and refuses to touch the edges of the food, it is probably because his whiskers are catching on the edges of the bowl and causing pain, irritation or discomfort. This is called mustache fatigue. Sometimes hungry pets can knock over the bowl and eat food from the floor to avoid unpleasant sensations.
Another theory suggests that due to an innate survival instinct passed down from their wild ancestors, cats are able to save food for later and therefore do not eat from a half-empty bowl. In the wild, cats will often hide their prey to try to hide the scent from predators that could potentially steal it.
