My lost cat returned after almost a year,

in #catsnaps4 years ago

Recently, one of the missing cat made a brief appearance at the house. At first I could hardly believe what I saw; a very skinny cat looking like three months old kitten with very tiny face. But my two orange cats were very excited and Kwan appeared to show that she was very happy and went straight to snuggle this tiny stray cat. She was hissed and threatened by the malnourished stray cat. Poor Kwan looked like she was going to cry so I had to comfort her and told her this would take time.

This skinny cat looked like Rosy, the aunty cat of these two fat cats, Joan and Kwan. To my surprise, she allowed me to touch her which was quite odd; the old Rosy would not allow me to get near her at all. But I recognised the scare she had on her head and the bump on her back as a result of being bitten by stray dogs when she was a small kitten.

I was so glad that Rosy found her way back after being chased by a pack of dogs almost a year ago. But she was very small and light, weighing about one kilo. I had to give her extra cat snack and food several times that day to fatten her up. She chose to sleep alone; her nephew and niece were hissed at throughout the day. Kwan tried several times to get close to Rosy but was smacked lightly in her face.

(Kwan was trying to get close to Rosy)

I had to devise a plan by forcing these cats to share the Dane bowl of four so that Rosy would slowly get used to the new scent. After a few days,Rosy stopped hissing the two younger cats. Kwan was quite persistent in trying to run her head against Rosy’s. This was very sweet of Kwan; after the mother cat disappeared, Rosy was the only adult cat who was looking after these two kittens. Kwan was always by Rosy’ side for safety and security.

(Kwan was being nice to Joan)

I had no idea that Rosy survived the dogs attack but she got completely shocked and ran away so far that she could not find her way home. Her wandering life must have been taking a toll on her health. She used to be much bigger than these two kittens, and now she is less than half their size. By the end of the week, I picked Rosy up and placed her next to where the two cats were sleeping. She just stayed there without protest; Kwan was so glad. Joan kept his distance and allowed Rosy to make the first move. Now they are back as a family; eating and sleeping together.

(I placed Rosy close to Kwan and Joan)

But then one day Rosy just disappeared from the house. I wonder why Rosy chose to leave the place where she would be well fed and looked after. It might be because she was used to the hunting life she had endured for almost a year. I was happy that she was alive and turned up at our house out of the blue. At least I know that she could look after herself and she remembered how to come back home.

Three weeks past, Rosy turned up looking very thin and famished again. She came back to stay for a week then she would go out like a Gypsy cat. I guessed Kwan would have to get used to this feeling of being left behind by her aunt Rosy. Joan was the bigger brother with more independence and confidence. I do wonder if I should get two more cats to keep a bigger cat family. My gardener would not like this plan of having more cats in the house. So, I think I should wait and see at the moment.

It's a real shame but this happens often, I think it's perhaps in their nature and nothing personal.

Thank you very much for your helpful feedback. I thought that had the stray dogs not attack those cats and chased them away into the woods and fields, things would have been quite different.

I was sad that I was not there to protect my kittens and cats. Those dogs knew when to sneaked into my garden. I always chased stray dogs away whenever I saw them.

Thank you very much for your generosity and sympathy.

Best.

Good news. Don't get more cats, they don't get along easily. Rosy will probably keep coming back until she remains with you

Hi! Thank you very much! Good to hear from you. Hope that you and you cat Peanut are doing well! You must be very busy! Hope things in SA will improve soon!

Take care!

Happy news!

Yep! I was quite shocked at first! But the two cats were quite excited.

Do you have any idea where the lost cat may have been? Just on a rumspringa? :)

I wish I knew! Those dogs must have chased all my cats quite far from the house. When Rosy was two months old, the whole family of six cats got chased by a pack of stray dogs. One kitten was killed. We looked around the house and garden. All cats disappeared for almost a week. Then the mother cat came back with one kitten.

Rosy came back after two weeks looking very bad; she was bitten with a big bloody hole on her back leg. That’s probably why she hid in the nearby woods for two weeks until she could walk again. It was terrible seeing the kitten limping around on three legs.

Rosy had very bad experience with these dogs twice! I am glad she survived her ordeals.

At some point, something has to be done about the stray dogs.

This pack of dogs killed over ten chickens in a villager’s farm. So, some dogs had been poisoned!! Very bad ending! Now there are only three dogs left in the wooded area.

In the developed world, municipal authorities include animal control that takes care of stray dogs. I must say, though, that geese at the lakeside are becoming a nuisance here. Wake up, animal control!

Yeah! They are smart cats and very gentle cats too!

Amazing Rosy.... A cat with many lives...To bad she lives a gypsy life...but good to know she's still around...Good job getting them back together ...

Yep! I was very surprised by Rosy’ survival ability. I do hope she will decide to stay put at the house one day. It’s nice to have three orange cats!

They look so nice together...😺😺😺

Thank you! Yep! It feels so warm to have a family of cats!

This is amazing news!
My cat left our house recently and only comes to eat with us, once or twice a day (sometimes once every two days)

Hi! Thank you very much for your sympathy. Rosy must have some angels looking after her. But I would like Rosy to stay home.

She has been sprayed so I was rather surprised by her hunting lifestyle. May be she has been living in the wild for a year so she gets used to it!
I hope your cat comes back to see you more often!

Have a nice weekend!

I'm so pleased she has returned. Hopefully, she will keep coming back now. They always say cats have more than one owner, but it's strange that she comes back thin though. Perhaps she just likes to have a walk on the wild side!

I didn’t know cats have two owners!

Rosy cane back quite malnourished and lost half her previous weight! She was probably lost in the far side of the village where there were more stray dogs.

I had one nice cat killed by a pack of dogs in the other village. The villager told me he had to bury my cat for me!

Another neighbour’ Siamese kitten got killed by German guard dogs in next door’s house last year!

Cats are not that fast in running away from chasing dogs!!

I think if you start feeding a cat you will find it will keep coming back. I used to live nextdoor to two cats. They were well looked after, so although I never fed them they'd quite often pop around for a visit. Sad about your cats.

Thank you so much for your understanding and kind sympathy.
Having cats has changed my life!

Cheers.

Oh your poor kitty! I hope she returns and decides to stay for good. She needs to be nice and fat like your other kitties!

Yup! I hope she’ll stay and let me fatten her up!

Cheers.

wow that's a really long time, usually they come back quick

Yup! I had resigned to the fact that she was dead! It’s a miracle that she found her way home after wandering around other villages and woods for almost a year! She was as skinny as three months old kitten!! I could not recognise her at first!

So glad she’s back!
