As of 12 March 2019, the market capitalisation has risen to $500 billion, making it one of the largest listed companies in the world. The reason for the high price is the fact that the Class A shares of this conglomerate will never undergo a stock split.

Chace had already worked with Samuel Slater, a successful textile entrepreneur in the United States. Chace founded his first textile company in 1806. In 1929 the company merged with the Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing Company, established in 1889. The merger of the companies became known as Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates.
In 1955, Berkshire Fine Spinning associates merged with the Hathaway Manufacturing Company, founded in 1888 by Horatio Hathaway. Hathaway was successful in the early decades, but suffered losses during the downturn of the textile industry after the First World War. After the merger, Berkshire Hathaway had 15 plants and employed more than 12,000 workers with revenues in excess of $120 million; seven of these plants closed by the end of the decade.
In 1962, billionaire Warren Buffett began buying Berkshire Hathaway shares, bought enough to change the direction of the company, and soon he controlled the company. At first, Buffett kept the focus of the business on textiles, but in 1967 he expanded into insurance, reinsurance and other investments. Berkshire entered the insurance industry with the purchase of National Indemnity Company. In 1985 it was the company's last textile operations.
Berkshire Hathaway has expanded significantly, from jewellery sales to brick manufacturing, with Warren Buffett as CEO.
