Feliz Día del Libro // Happy Book Day

¡Hola, Mundo!

Hello, World!

Today we celebrated International Book Day all over the world. It is more than thirty years since Unesco declared it, commemorating the deaths of three literary greats: the Englishman William Shakespeare and the Spaniards Garcilaso de la Vega and Miguel de Cervantes. They are not the only great writers who died or were born on this date, but the importance of these three cannot be denied. For the Spanish language, spoken (written and read) by more than 543 million people (the fourth most spoken in the world), it is a source of pride that Garcilaso and Cervantes are especially remembered on this day. Specifically, "Book Day" since 1988 and "Copyright Day" since 1995. This day is used to promote reading, to recognise the work of publishers and to preserve copyright. Above all, it is a boost for the publishing industry, as it is around these days that Book Fairs are set up in all cities, events are organised, special activities are held in educational centres, etc. Today I visited the Book Fair in my city and I found a general discount in the whole shop, something unusual when you go to buy literature. Another excuse (I never need them hehehehe) to come loaded with books.

I have always liked reading, since I was very young. I would reread the books I had at home over and over again, and I also used the ones in the school library and the neighbourhood library. When I continued my studies, I opted for Literature, and so I had to study them as well as read them. It wasn't the same, really. With deadlines, exams... but they were still experiences that filled my soul. Of course, I have a love for Spanish classics and the literature that emerged before, during and after the Spanish Civil War.

I have not always been a devourer of books. There have been times when I haven't read at all, and other times when my reading was devoted to other learning, required at certain moments in my life.

And I must confess, apart from reading, I like to buy books. Sometimes I have borrowed something, and after reading it, I have gone to buy a copy for myself. Books are treasures, and if I like a book, I want my copy (hehehehehe). In my student days I couldn't afford it, and now I don't miss the opportunity to get my hands on the editions I want.

Lately (as you can see in my profile) I write every day (I had never written before in my life, I even thought I didn't like it) and I read less, because it is in the hours immediately after going to bed, in the silence of the night, when I have the opportunity to do so. So I have a few books piled up on my bedside table: the book I read years ago and want to pick up again, the one that has been recommended to me, the one I couldn't resist buying because I love the subject matter, and the one I reread because it comforts me... there may even be a children's book, for when the puppy sneaks into my bed.

There are never enough, nor too many. They must have a special place in my house, because they do in my heart.

Happy Book Day.
