I can't speak for CATS and KITTENS, but it seems to me like a mainly investment oriented structure designed around a "mining" token and a "peg"?!
CAT on the other hand functions as a symbolic token, over 1 million CAT were distributed for free in an initial airdrop, and its main function right now is to serve as CATnip for token-holders, attracting some cuddle-bots that have been operating on the chain for two years already, prior to the token launch.
