In the first world war chemical weapons were used on a large scale, which caused the death of more than 100,000 people and more than one million victims. In the Second World War it was not used in the battlefield in Europe but it gave space to the nuclear debate where several countries concluded that the value of having chemical weapons in their arsenal was limited; and the availability and proliferation of this type of weapon required a general prohibition.

Approved in 1993, the Chemical Weapons Convention came into force on April 29, 1997 and it was determined that for the good of humanity it was necessary to completely exclude the possibility of the use of chemical weapons. The states that took part in the convention established the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons as an entity in charge of achieving the objectives of this convention, as well as the application of its provisions, including the verification of compliance with international standards. .

Today 98% of the world population is in the states that are part of this organization and it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013, for its continuous efforts in the world to eliminate chemical weapons.

It is necessary to take into account this type of atrocities that occurred in the past so as not to make these mistakes again. The world must take into account and condemn with all possible weight any attempt to return to these vile practices. The right to life must be our premise at all times as a society.

Thank you very much for reading and appreciating.
