ORIGIN AND HISTORY
Origin unknown. Maybe India 6th Century or China. Indians play the most chess. About 605 million people play chess regularly worldwide (1). Influences to the modern day game include Indian game Chaturanga (2).
LONGEST CHESS GAME
The longest game (in terms of moves) was played by Nikolić–Arsović, Belgrade 1989. It lasted a whopping 269 moves and elapsed 20 hrs & 15 mins to the finish (3).
CHESS PIECES
KING
Can move one space in any direction but not into check. Check is the move where it would be at risk of being collected by opponents pieces.
QUEEN
Unlimited moves in any direction.
ROOK
Unlimited moves in one direction (either forward/back or sideways but not diagonal) per turn.
BISHOP
Can move diagonal with unlimited spaces. One direction per turn.
KNIGHT
Moves in an L fashion. Four squares per move.
PAWN
Two spaces on first move of each pawn. Can move diagonal for collecting opponent pieces. When faced with opponents pawn that equals frozen pawn.

King cannot move into check (A move that could potentially lead to collection by opponents pieces).
