When you turn away from GOD, you cause many of your own problems; God is not punishing you.
Most of your hurts comes from the consequences you get as a result of the decision you made to ignore God and His ways.
The judgement for drinking poison is death from poisoning. You don't need God to kill you after drinking poison.
The burning is in the heat. In order words you don't need God's intervention to get burned; just put your hand into the fire. The judgement of putting your hands into the fire is inherent in the fire itself; you get burned.
What these examples are saying is that God doesn't have to do anything to judge you. You judge yourself by your activities, by your participation based on your decision to live according to your own knowledge.
You are a victim of your own decision, not of God's judgement.
