Esther 3:2 (KJV)
And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.
It seems to me that, in many ways, Mordecai is the complement to Daniel and his three friends. They were:
Taken from Jerusalem
Trained in the Babylonian culture
Served the king but
Refused to bow at the idol
Mordecai was:
Raised in Babylon
Lived outside of the palace
Loyal to the king
Refused to bow before Haman but was
Returned in the end to Jerusalem
From the beginning of the Babylonian captivity to the very end there were Jews who were loyal citizens and, at the same time, faithful believers.
May God grant us Christians with that same balance.
