What is the most important commandment? Love God. Love others.
But God is not tangible. One cannot simply love God. One must have faith in order to identify God from their perspective and then love God in that light. We are imperfect and it is difficult to love God when He is limited to our mind. The only thing we can give God is ourselves. Our lives.
We love Him by listening. We love him by communicating. I believe we listen through worship and communicate through prayer. We then act on his behalf in our love for others. Religious acts are nice and they help regain focus on the One who loves us but they are for the individual. I believe a true understanding of the most important commandment is to love creation.
What better way to love God, than to love others on his behalf?
How can one love God and not actively love others?
And how do we love others? By being nice? By giving to them? By waiting on their needs? By "saving them?" I argue "no." I argue by knowing others by knowing yourself. By serving others as you would wish to be served. By recognizing those around you and getting to know them. Not by smiling. Not by pleasantries. By asking questions. By acknowledging that they are safe with you. Because you love them.
Your neighbor does not need to be held to your standard of perfection. Barriers are necessary if they are not safe. But don't judge them. You are just as messy. Don't get wound up on the negative. Love them. Let them know you. Let them know what you are unhappy about without the need for entitlement. You suck as they suck. Maybe even help them. They deserve your love.
As this is put into practice, your neighbor will see the light you shine. Let it shine. Be confident in your light. Your light is all that you can control. Others lights can be fanned but not controlled. Fan their light. Allow God to fan yours. He's here. He's now. You are a broken being loved by Perfection. Love other broken beings that are also loved by Perfection. It's the most important commandment.
