Georg Wilhelm Saxer, Fuge, F Dur

in #classical-music5 years ago (edited)

Besides the works attributed to a composer, the Leipziger manuscript with signature Becker II.2.51 preserves two preludes and fugues and two fugues without a named composer. The fugues share strong similarities with the three fugues that do bear the name of Georg Wilhelm Saxer. The counterpoint is not really sophisticated and musical development is mostly absent. The fugues in F major consist of 3 expositions in a row with hardly any episodic material between them. The music does not venture outside the tonic and the dominant, which could be boring but actually is not. Quite an accomplishment.

The recording was done on the sample set of the Müller-organ in the Sint Bavokerk in Haarlem by Voxus Organs for Hauptwerk.
