Ice-climbing day 3 - let it snow, let is snow, let it snow

in #climbing6 years ago

This morning I had some troubles to get going again, after a few days the energy level can get a little bit lower so I had to drag myself to the start of the route.

Luckily Jasper didn’t suffer from laziness, so he lead the first length giving me a nice warm-up seconding the pitch.

The route was largely cleaned of the excessive snow, which was nice for a chance. The route followed a series of small frozen pillars, which were nice to climb. Since I’m more a boulderer than climber my arms can get pumped after not too many meters of climbing. So long vertical pillars are always an extra commitment, knowing that I will suffer badly.

After a while, it started snowing again. We were trying to speed up a little bit, because we wanted to top out, but also knew we had to rappel the entire route, and if there is too much fresh snow the avalanche danger increases.

Under the supervision of a mountain goat we rappelled quickly down under deteriorating conditions and made it safe to the ground.

Mountain goats are some tough folks! Just like you! :-) The third picture is amazing, showing the full majesty of a frozen waterfall!

These animals are really tough yes, they don't care what the weather is. Through out the year they will watch what you are doing in the mountains. I always enjoy having them around.

I love all kinds of mountaineering, but ice climbing is something I haven't tried. I would need to learn how to anchor in ice and use ice screws among other things. It's looks damn hard. Nice job!

I didn't know how to climb a waterfall and did a 7-day course to learn it. Was definitely worth the money! To be honest, the climbing is most of the times not the hard part, it's the cold that makes you suffer :-)
