郭益南，祖籍廣東揭陽，1921年出生于砂拉越古晉，父親為牙醫。
30年代郭益南到中國學習中醫，後隨蔣介石的國民軍，曾在南京、武漢、廣州等地行醫。
1941年，郭益南回婆羅州行醫，在亞庇（哥打京那巴魯）落戶。
1942年，日本海軍攻陷荷蘭東印度公司控制的南婆羅州，日本陸軍幾乎同時在美里登陸並迅速佔領婆羅州北部全境，守衛古晉的英軍古卡兵部隊（主要由印度旁遮普裔組成）由森林經當今印尼加里曼丹省鼠竄逃去，整個婆羅州遂淪陷。
蝗軍在佔領區派發英文和爪夷馬來文傳單，大肆宣揚大東亞共榮圈，口號是“Asia for Asians” (是否似曾相識？)。同時牠們加緊把汶萊美里的石油等物資送往大陸戰場。
當時身陷亞庇的郭益南發起成立抵抗軍神山游擊隊，陸續對侵略軍發起攻擊，嘗擊斃日軍數十人。
日軍無法鎖定游擊隊，於是對附近村莊狂轟濫炸，死逾1600人，逼迫游擊隊就範。郭等無奈投降，旋即被捕。
1944年春節前夕，郭益南等四人被砍頭處決，其餘游擊隊員被槍斃。
1945年日本投降，婆羅州光復，殖民者回歸。
1949年，北婆羅州（今沙巴）建立比達卡斯戰爭紀念公園（Petagas War Memorial Park），以紀念郭益南等神山游擊隊抵抗日本蝗軍的事跡。

- 時值吉打州日軍英雄紀念碑鬧劇，僅分享真正國家英雄事跡，以彰天理。如郭益南這等英雄，今天的英國政府不會宣揚，中華人民共和國或中華民國政權當然也不會，而馬來西亞一個州政府為日本領事館的三萬塊錢沾沾自喜，居然為三個鬼子兵重修紀念碑並宣揚其“wira”事跡，是非之不分，正義之淪喪，可悲可歎！
