mung beans are NOT “green” beans 綠豆並非 “green” beans

in #cn6 years ago (edited)

In hot weather, Chinese people enjoy eating refreshing cool bowls of 綠豆湯 lǜdòu tāng / liuhdow tang [literally] “green bean soup”, which is actually mung beans served in sweetened water (刨冰 bàobīng / bawbing “shaved ice” or 煉乳 liànrǔ / liannruu “condensed milk” are sometimes added).

Mung beans are also eaten in the form of sprouts and noodles. Here is a cool time-lapse video shot over three and a half days (2'50") showing mung beans germinating ("[Time-Lapse] Mung Bean Germination"):

Because most Chinese don’t know that mung beans are originally from the Indian subcontinent, when speaking/writing English, they are incorrectly rendered word for word from Chinese as “green beans” on menus and food labels.

Mung Bean Dal (印度料理:真正的綠豆湯)

Here are two recipes for mung bean dal, a simple but very tasty Indian “comfort food”.

1. Mung Bean Dal

An easy Indian recipe for 綠豆; captions only

2. Whole Green Moong daal (Whole Green Gram Beans)

This is a more complicated Indian recipe for 綠豆

Fried Green Beans (法式、川式四季豆)

Because you prepare them by pulling off a “string”, green beans are also called string beans. The Chinese name is 四季豆 sìjìdòu / syhjihdow “[literally] four season bean”

3. Garlic Green Beans Recipe

This is an easy French-style recipe (the woman has a super clear voice!)

4. Chinese Spicy Szechuan Green Beans stir fry

The voice is a little hard to follow (sound quality and accent), but the recipe is worth making
