“Dog” is either 狗 gǒu/goou or 犬 quǎn/cheuan. What’s the difference? 狗 et 犬: Quelle est la différence?『狗』和『犬』怎麼區別呢?(對外漢語教學:英法對照)

gǒu/goou is the Modern word for “dog” (a free morpheme). 犬 quǎn/cheuan is the Classical Chinese word.

En chinois moderne le caractère 狗 gǒu/goou represente le mot «chien» (un morphème libre en mandarin). Le caractère 犬 quǎn/cheuan porte le meme sens, mais en chinois classique.

In Modern Chinese, 犬 functions as a bound morpheme, not a freestanding word (“bound” = not used in isolation). 犬 is used to form compound words in modern written Chinese.
En chinois moderne, 犬 fonctionne comme morphème lié (non pas comme mot indépendant) qui forme des mots composés.

The bound morpheme 犬 quǎn/cheuan is also used to form idioms and proverbs referring to dogs.
Le morphème lié 犬 *quǎn/cheuan * sert aussi à former des expressions idiomatiques et des proverbes.

狗 is used to form colloquial compounds and idioms. Although there are many dog lovers in modern China, the negative connotations of these expressions make it obvious that these animals were definitely not seen as “man’s best friend”.

Le morphème 狗 sert à former beaucoup plus d’expressions idiomatiques. Bien qu’il y ait pas mal d’amateurs de chiens en république populaire et à Taïwan, les connotations négatives de ces expressions montrent clairement que ces animaux étaient mal vus avant les temps modernes.
