We asked our Readers - Do people in Crypto still care about self-sovereignty of funds?

Hello Hive!

A couple of weeks ago we started asking our newsletter readers their opinion on various crypto-related issues. We thought to share our findings here with the public in the hope it may interest some of you out there.

We're sure that a good chunk of the hive community reels from the roller-coaster ride that was the Steem fund seizure fiasco last week:

During that period, we touched upon the subject in our newsletter as well as asked our readers a few questions.

Mainly, we asked:
1. On the scale of 1 to 10, how important is self-sovereignty when it comes to owning crypto for you?
2. Does it bother you that the coins you hold are involved in crimes or scandals, even if indirectly?
3. Why do you think so?

here's a breakdown of the data we got:

1) Self-sovereignty is very important when it comes to owning crypto.

An overwhelming 75.6% gave a strong 10 on the scale when it comes to self-sovereignty - the full ownership of one's wealth without intervention from any 3rd party. Less than 5% gave a score of 5 and below.

Basically, a majority of people still agree that "No one should have control of my money, even if it means that I cannot count on anyone else to take custody of my funds".

2) Many are not bothered by the fact that the coins they hold may be indirectly involved in crimes or scandals.

For example, time and time again many has called Bitcoin as a "money launderer's tool". Or in the more recent and morbid case involving South Korea Massive Nth Room Scandal. Even so, most holders are unabashed over the fact that they own Bitcoin or Monero.

3) "Anything can be a tool to a crime"

We asked our readers to give their thoughts to explain their stance on the 2 previous answers. There are many opinions, here we share some of the more profound and popular ones that reflect the majority of the answers we've seen so far;

Fiat is also used in crimes and scandals.:-)

-Crypto Rod

Crime -- or better stated -- actions with which I disagree will be extant regardless of the medium of exchange.

-Fellow human

Fiat is the de facto tool of money launders

-rodmarcos

Fiat is also involved with crime. So is gold. So are many other things, and at a much much higher volume. Ideally, no crime should be done using any of these but the reality is that crime happens and crypto in no way facilitates more crime than fiat.

Thanks for putting the results here on Hive.

Nice newsletter idea. And thank you fir sharing the findings with the Hive community @coingecko.

I think the results are pretty much as expected considering the questions. The self-sovereignty question should even have a larger percentage of "10" answers in my opinion.

We personally agree that an 11 out 10 scale is appropriate.

Yes, thank you for this.
Very interesting findings, but some of the comments by people does make sense in some way even if the result may be different from expectations 🤔

Thanks for sharing and for this good information.
