Card Corner #1: 1990 Score Rookie/Traded 70T - Jaromir Jagr

in #collectibles7 years ago

One of my interests is sports card collecting. I hope to write regularly on cards I collect and have come across. Some of them will focus on the interesting history of the card/player and some will focus on the relative valuation of the card.

Please note my first 3 posts are from reviews I wrote on my WordPress (https://cardboardstocks.wordpress.com/)

Card: 1990 Score Rookie/Traded 70T - Jaromir Jagr

Key Corners:

Demand of Card: Jagr is the 2nd all-time point scorer and 3rd all-time goal scorer (HoF statistics)
Supply of Card: Jagr has a number of rookie cards available. The 70T is one of the rarest with ~250 graded at 10/10 (PSA Grading System)
Comparison Cards: I believe Joe Sakic's 1989 OPC and Steve Yzerman's 1984 Topps are comparisons based on Supply and Demand.

Demand of the Card:

Jaromir Jagr is a modern greats in the NHL and is at the top of the all-time points and goals. He is an active player but his career stats make him a highly desirable modern-era player to collect for card collectors.

Supply of the Card:

Jagr entered the league at a time (1990s) when the card market was saturated with high volumes and high quality cards. As a result, Jagr has 5+ rookie cards and many of his cards can be bought in perfect condition for $5.

Given the high volume, I have selected his card which has the lowest supply of perfect grades (PSA 10/10) - the Score Rookie/Traded card (70T). Jagr’s most expensive rookie card (OPC Premier) currently lists for ~$150 but has ~2,100 cards that have a perfect grading. The 70T Score Rookie/Traded has ~250, making it rarer.

Relative Valuation:

I believe Jagr’s career stats put him in the same tier as Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman.

Joe Sakic (1989) and Steve Yzerman (1984) have 2 rookie cards- OPC and Topps. The Joe Sakic OPC and Steve Yzerman Topps rookie cards sell for ~$150 in perfect condition

Jagr’s OPC Premier card (most expensive) has already tested the card range of Sakic/Yzerman ($150+), however, looking on eBay, the PSA 10 Jagr Score Traded 70T is currently listed for $30.
