Hacia la época de lluvia comienzan a crecer las nuevas espigas del año de los frailejones del páramo venezolano, para florecer cerca de setiembre al final del invierno y adornar el páramo de oro puro con millones de flores durante todo el mes de octubre. Hasta diciembre, aunque en menor cuantía, se ven muchas inflorescencias todavía radiantes.
El frailejón es una planta de la familia de las compositae, en la que también se incluyen plantas como las margaritas, el girasol y el tabacote morado del páramo. Se conocen unas 45 especies en los páramos de Perú, Ecuador, Colombia y Venezuela.Esta planta se encuentra distribuida (aproximadamente) entre los 2000 y los 4300 m.s.n.m. Alimentándose del agua de los deshielos y cobijado por las nieblas de las sierra nevadas de Perú, Colombia, Venezuela y Ecuador.
La especie más común en el páramo venezolano es el Frailejón de Octubre (Espeletia schultzii). Hacia la sierra de la Culata, en el páramo de Piedras Blancas, hay otra especie muy interesante, debido a que alcanza más de dos metros de altura, esta es la Espeletia moritziana.
Las flores del frailejón Espeletia schultzii son muy parecidas a las de las margaritas; y la disposición radiante típica de sus pétalos es característica de la familia.
Los habitantes de las altas montañas han atribuido poderes medicinales al frailejón, su resina se usa como ungüento y el té o cataplasma preparado con las hojas combate el asma y afecciones pulmonares.
