Exactly what color is Indigo? Painted Tiger Lily by SteemPowerPics - ColorChallenge IndigoSaturday

There seems to be a lot of confusion over the color Indigo. Is it blue? Is it purple? Does it even exist?

We've all been taught the colors in a rainbow when we were kids. Most of us know them by the acronym ROY G BIV (Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet). So we have been told it's there even if it is hard to really see in an actual rainbow in the sky.

I'm honestly not sure it fully deserves it's own color classification. That is something that has always bothered me going way back to my days at the Art Institute. It certainly is NOT a Primary, or Secondary color as we are taught in school.

So what gives?

Indigo is an in between tertiary color, like red-orange (rust) or blue-green (auqua), and just as there are hundreds of variations of those, there are many variations of what we call indigo. So it is really more like a "blue-violet".

Even the famed Isaac Asimov has been quoted as saying, "It is customary to list indigo as a color lying between blue and violet, but it has never seemed to me that indigo is worth the dignity of being considered a separate color. To my eyes it seems merely deep blue."^

The topic is even open for discussion over on the wikipedia page for Indigo where the various hues and shades of indigo are shown leaning towards violet, more than blue.

I suppose it remains open for debate.

My aura is indigo and i am an indigo child. It is a real color and has metaphysical properties.. Up'd and R'steem! Great job!

Hi Liz, Thank you. I'm definitely not debating the color itself, the wavelength falls within the visible spectrum, I was debating more of it's place in the grand scheme of colors. The rainbow and everything we see is a breakdown of primary and secondary colors, indigo is more of a third-tier blend. Aqua is given metaphysical aura properties, but not listed as a "color in the rainbow", that was more of my point - from the artist angle.

It may not be listed in the primary rainbow but in "Chakra" it is there!

I can't say that I've ever used indigo to describe a color, it's all purple or fancy purple, but then I'm not a photographer, and if I was then I would likely do black and white, maybe a bit of Grey too. B)

Hey Mark, I hear ya. My very first color challenge post was for indigo, I even commented in that post that it straddles the line between blue-indigo-violet. It's a fun debate though.

Aww... poor Indigo! LOL
I have to agree with Isaac Asimov too, I've always considered it a very deep blue with purplish undertones because you are right, it's not a primary color. It's definitely an in-betweeny. :)

Well it's not all doom and gloom for indigo. It has good company with aqua, amber and others as tertiary colors with more creative names than just "blue". lol

They say great minds think alike @steempowerpics but you are able to express your thoughts much more eloquently than I my friend! :)

You did a great job here! Very nice piece of artwork!

I am all confused now haha
Indigo to me is an electric blue, purple hue.

:-) Yep, that's part of the confusion of this color. It's a blend, and can be interrupted so many ways.

It's always weird to me haha

Red, orange, yellow, green blue, indigo, violet are the colors of the rainbow. Look at a rainbow and you will see indigo, just before the violet, I use the hex colors for use in Photoshop and the hex code for violet is #4B0082
Beautiful image! i love the blend of colors in it!

Hi @dmcamera, I'm not debating if it actually exists, just the validity of it as an official rainbow color. There are many transitional colors in the rainbow, but we dont declare them in that respect. Seems to be a larger topic of discussion among artists.

Thank you for the feedback, I'm happy you like my image.

I know. I was just giving my two cents worth. LOL!

I'll accept it :-)

great colours

Thank you @floata. Glad you like my work.
