Colour Blind or Colour Stupid

in #colour6 years ago

Before I get on with my rant....

I just did a Google Search of "Colour Stupid" and heres what I found

You can see, in the results, the image (shown below) that caused quite a stir a few years (or was it months) ago... People were asked what colour the dress was but couldn't really quite decide whether it was a combination of gold and white stripes or one of blue and black stripes...

Which was it you ask? I'll let you decide. Because where's the fun in telling you what I think... Right?

Okay I'm getting tired of this red markers that apparently don't play nice with the spelling of colour... Is it Colour or Color?
Well... If your'e wondering too you should know that both are actually right. It all depends on where you come from. Color is mostly used in the US while colour is used in most if not all other English speaking nations. For this post I'll stick with colour.

Colour Blindness

Let's first start by demystifying what colour blindness is.

There are various types of colour blindness. I wanna be brief so I'll just list them here...

Normal visioned people are called trichromats because they possess all three independent channels for conveying color information.

  1. Anomalous Trichromacy - a condition characterized by having one of the three channels not perceiving colour properly. This results in three different effects since any of the three channels may be the one exhibiting this anormally.
  2. Dichromacy - a condition where only two channels perceive colour as expected.
  3. Monochromacy - a condition whereby the monochromatic person has no colour perception. They only perceive objects in different shades of black and white.

There are other types of colour blindnesses as per the specific channels that perceive colour under these major types of colour blindness but I'm not gonna delve into those. I promised to be brief remember...

My main issue, the one that "inspired" me to come up with this post, is that I feel people confuse the two - colour blind and colour stupid. Just because I call a different shade of blue - blue and not turquoise blue doesn't really mean I'm colour blind. I'm just not aware that that specific shade of blue has a name. I've heard people say this a lot. Must be the same thing that lead the guy who designed this to conclude that men are colour blind.
