Update on That Detective Comics #21

in #comics5 years ago

Last week I posted a piece on a wonderful comic book that popped into our shop. You can check it out below if ya wish to, but the quick recap is that a lovely lady brought the book which just happens to be Detective Comics #21 from 1938, in to find out more about it.

It was left to her by her late husband, and she ended up going with my recommendation of getting It pressed and graded. Long story short...it arrived back into the shop safe and sound with a fantastic grade of a 6.5 tying it for the second highest graded copy of this book in the world right behind a 7.0. Badass!!!

Yesterday the owner of this lovely piece of history came in to pick it up and seemed over the moon when I told her the possible numbers this could bring in. I had thought the plan was to sell initially but I guess she put thought into it and was going to give it to her brother. But that was when they were thinking this was worth about a thousand bucks or so.

I told her that my estimations of this would be a scenario of a $5000 floor with possibilities of it rocketing past that number. It’s hard to pin point an exact number or even a rough ballpark on a book like this as there simply isn’t enough comparable sales and data to come to a hard conclusion.

I threw out the options of how to move this if she wished to do so with a consignment deal with us being a top choice. She’s going to discuss with her brother and decide together on the best course of action for them, but for now...she will go home with a piece of amazing history.

It must feel so nice holding something so rare, specially if you love comics like i do. I mean look at her smile :D

Yeah she was super pumped!

That's a nice surprise for her. I wonder if her husband knew what it was worth.

From what she told me, not really. The other books with it weren’t anything of value but a gift from another family member. So I think initially it held more sentimental value.

Damn, what a great find. Do you find that you're able to move such items quickly? My local store has a really hard time with back issues and old items.

Luckily We do alot with back issues and keys. Although I don’t think this would be a quick flip in the shop by any means. Finding someone who is willing to drop dough on a non Batman Detective Comics from the 30’s isn’t a common thing, but I’m confident we would find a buyer to conduct a safe transaction versus just throwing it on the wild Wild West of eBay.
