I wonder if Nick Spencer was hungry when he was thinking of naming his main characters in The Fix? Roy = (Chicken) Roy(ale), Mac = (Big)Mac/Mac(‘n’cheese), and Pretzels. I rewatched Pulp Fiction for the umpteenth time this past weekend so it’s probably that brilliant conversation between Jules and Vincent that’s making me think this (Royale with cheese! What’d they call a Big Mac? Le Big Mac).

Anyways: Mac’s cheesed off with the dipshits who tried to kill his buddy Pretzels (the adorable Beagle) and sets out for revenge. Meanwhile the famous actress Roy was meant to be guarding has been killed and he’s desperately trying not to get the blame. Get ready to read The Fix, Volume 3: Deal! Of! Fortune!

The Fix continues to be one of Image’s best current titles and this third book is great fun. The cast are as amusing a mess as they’ve been throughout: hapless LAPD Detectives Roy and Mac bumbling from one fuckup to the next, the crazy producer managing to find new levels of cray and the nucking futs young LA Mayor continuing to act like a stoner dudebro in secret.

We get to see how lethal Deal, Josh’s enforcer, is, though Josh doesn’t have as many funny scenes in this one as he has done before. He’s no less psychopathic though as his unlikely Instagram shows! And I loved the pathetic ISIS terrorist character with the, er, “cold” – no really, having PornHub constantly playing on his laptop has nothing to do with all the tissues scattered around his hotel room…

I didn’t see the point of the horny grandma character but she was kinda funny and fit in with the overall chaotic comedy. We didn’t get to see enough of him but I liked Pretzels’ rehab sequence juxtaposed nicely with Mac’s feeble attempt at getting healthy himself. And Steve Lieber’s art continues to be on point, selling Spencer’s humour perfectly, nailing the facial expressions and bizarre imagery.

The only real complaint I have about this one is that the story is a bit thin on the ground and could be a little more focused. I still enjoyed the hell out of The Fix, Volume 3: Deal of Fortune though, as I’m sure any fan of the series will too.
