When the Zen architecture debuted in 2017 it turned the game over.
Intel had dominated for a long while, and AMD was in dire straits.
They even sold off their corporate HQ in Silicon Valley, and spun off Global Foundries(their actual manufacturer of the chips). They're fabless now, and rely on TSMC in Taiwan.
In 2013 their stock price was around $3.00, and I actually talked to another guy about putting $1000 together(I was broke) to buy as many shares as we could.
I had a lot of faith in their CEO, and knew they were bringing Jim Keller back to engineer a new architecture. Keller designed the Athlon architecture that put them ahead of Intel the first time back in early 2000's.
Their stock price today is $537 per share so $1000 would have turned into approx $178,000 in 13 years. Probably one of the wildest turnarounds for a major company.
The problem was back then you needed to go to an investment firm to setup an account to purchase stocks.
Today you can do it on a phone through an app in a few minutes.
I've not kept up with industry news. I used to be interested in what new processors came out, but everything is so fast now. I selected components based on a standard model and upgraded a few bits where the price increase was reasonable. I'm not a gamer, so I don't need the top of the range.
