Props for showrunners not calling the episode "Kobayashi Maru". Also, I missed the f-bomb. I'm not going to rewatch to find it, but I'm glad I managed to avoid it.
Your points about the spiritual connections raised during the episode as well as Picard's and Riker's counter-perspectives influenced by loss and gain made me realize that there is also a spiritual connection of the same kind connected with the nebula. I don't want to leave spoilers here, but the nebula is also spiritual and related to loss/gain as what comes is a new beginning/birth/rebirth which is in its own way spiritual. I wouldn't have noticed that had I not watched this review. This is classic TNG because episodes usually had a struggle within crew that was metaphorical or symbolically related to the meaning behind the episode itself. For me, this throwback was some welcomed fan service.
Another great episode!
