I think people do care, but they don't want to know. The reason is, if they see the truth in what is really happening their whole perception of the world shatters and that can be very frightening for most people. So they prefer to cling to what they know.
I think more and more people are seeing through these operations and that's largely thanks to the internet and social media...they can't quite control it. This is also why people like Theresa May are calling for an internet ban.
