What struck me about both the work in progress and the other one featuring penguins that the artist completed some time ago is that the artist has captured the color of life at the poles. Some years ago I read The Worst Journey in the World, an account of Scott's expedition to Antarctica, and out of that tragic story there was also a great deal of writing about how beautiful Antarctica is, and how every color of its year-long day and night is reflected in the ice and snow, a constant feast for the senses. This artist captures that reality better than any other I have seen anywhere. The colors he is developing in his work in progress also do suggest autumn in Antarctica, which is the season right now.
