this was a wild run. You took the story in a completely unexpected direction, complete with its own horror. The idea of the vamps as parasitic husks, the dystopic operating table, consciousness in a cloud. You established a proper universe for the story to take place in.

I was reminded of lions. The great felines were once the scourge of the night, and higher than us on the food chain. And today we're protecting, feeding and studying them out of scientific curiosity. That's how vampires would end up eventually, I think, if they existed.
