I bet you’re tired of having online disputes with everyone. From doing a freelance work to being the one who pays for one, there are always a problem. The difference it’s if it can be solved, and how. Many websites don’t actually offer a guarantee for you to receive exactly what you’re looking for or, if you’re the one doing the job, they don’t guarantee that you’re going to receive your payment even if when you already did half the job, the contractor decides not to keep with the project.

Blockchain has bringed a lot of amazing Dapps and incredible resolutions to many virtual conflicts or needs. And guess what? Now, it brings us a way to solve our virtual money related disputes. It’s name is: Kleros

What is Kleros?

Kleros it’s a dispute resolution platform that brings you jurors specializing in various categories to solve your dispute through smart contracts. How? Kleros escrows funds involved in any dispute until the resolution finally comes to hand by selected jurors.
What does this mean? This means that both sides on a dispute are protected in any broke-contract scenario.

How does it work?

Here is a video explanation taken from Kleros Youtube channel.

So, as the video explains us, you or your contractor put the money into a smart contract. Then, you can select the most related subcourt for a dispute case scenario and in case one of the persons has an issue with the payment guidelines or simply, just don’t want to pay, you come to Kleros and start your dispute. Both parties can be relaxed because, in case of a dispute, it can be solved by experts on the area.

How to trust them?

You don’t have to just take my word. You can actually go right now into Kleros webpage and try they Doges Trial, as you can see an example below:

Incentive system

Jurors rule disputes in order to collect arbitration fees. They are incentivized to rule honestly because, after a dispute is over, jurors whose vote is not coherent with the group will lose some tokens which will be given to coherent jurors.

Kleros states that, even with low dispute resolution fees, the jurors are properly compensated to keep the ethic and good work going.
As the jurors are given an amount of tokens, when they reach a resolution, the incoherent voters lose some tokens while coherent voters gain some tokens.

A great example is given by our @OriginalWorks friends:

For example, if there are five jurors, with outcome options "A" and "B". If four choose "A" and one chooses "B", then option "A" will win. In this case, the one judge who voted "B" would be considered to have voted incoherently. Although one dispute is not very telling, if a judge rules incoherently 90% of the time over 100 instances, clearly they are a poor judge and they would lose tokens.

Use-Cases

  • Crowdfunding
There’s a new start-up waiting for investors to jump in. Everything looks fine, but, after the fundraising ends, the investors don’t see any product derivated from the investment they contributed with.
Thanks to Kleros, they don’t have to see their money just disappear. They can start a dispute and if the start-up owner doesn’t present evidence that support him being on the process of creation, the funds are refunded to the investors.
  • Social Media
Let’s say here on Steemit, which is a Dapp (Descentralized app) someone is spamming or even harassing people on the platform. As we Steemians know, this breaks the terms and conditions or said in a better way, it breaks the Steemit rules. Kleros jurors can rule to deduct reputation points from that user and we all know that hurts our accounts.

Benefits

  • This a game-changing platform since, going to court would mean a big invest between time, lawyers and effort. And what is even worst: most of times the amounts of money that are between most of virtual disputes don’t meet with the money we could use in real life courts.

  • This could be the hugest tool for Amazon, Etsy and other e-commerce platforms, even for e-commerce freelancers as they can protect their investment and the clients can protect their money in case the product/service doesn’t meet their expectations.

  • Kleros would mean the greatest tool for freelancer as they can secure their work in case of a late negative decision from their contractors and contractors as well can secure the job done in case the freelancer decides to just drop out or quit the job without beforehand announcement.

Conclusion

I think we can all agree in something: virtual disputes are one of the worst parts of online jobs. Wether you're the one doing the job or the one paying fot the job, disputes are always near. It would be great to avoid them, but they are part of today's blockchain works and projects. At least, we can now be happy because there's a great tool to reach fast resolutions. We can now be happy Kleros exists.
