This is a magnificent tree when grown in the open, with the top growing broadly and large branches extending out at wide angles. Its valuable wood can be used for many purposes including the construction of barrels used to age whiskey and wine. Its nuts are an important source of energy for wildlife. This tree is known to live more than 500 years. Its bark is a light colour and is broken vertically and horizontally. Its colour makes it stand out from darker trees around it. Very typical is the flared base, much like an upturned trumpet.
