Harold of the Apocalypse

Welcome to my first co-authoring project. Below, you'll find the essentials of character and plot. If you'd like full details on how this will work, check out this post from earlier today.

Here are the basic rules for participation:

I'm looking for writers to contribute chapters to a story. I will be writing every other chapter myself and selecting the even numbered chapters from submissions from any steemit user that wants to participate. I'm shooting for 20 chapters.

  1. Chapters will be 1000-2000 words
  2. Chapters must follow the plot, characters, setting and other elements of the existing chapters.
  3. Audience members will be asked to vote on the submitted chapters.
  4. I will select from the three top voted chapters
  5. No automated, or bot votes allowed.
  6. A running list of the chapters will be published with my even numbered chapters, linking to the blogs of the selected chapters.
  7. I will be sharing revenue on my chapters with the selected authors.

For more detail, visit the original announcement post here.

Our story will center around Harold Carrier, a thirty year old crypto trader who keeps to himself. He lives in the present, half of the time, but he begins to have what he thinks are visions of an apocalyptic future. Chapters 1-3

The details in these visions begin to line up with things that are starting to happen in his current time, making him believe they might be more. So, he begins to prepare for the collapse of modern life, following the pattern his future self remembers. Chapters 4-6

Weird things start happening that make Harold think it's more than a premonition. In fact, he discovers proof that he's actually living in two timelines simultaneously, only being conscious of one at a time. Chapters 7-9

Finally a crisis occurs that forces Harold to choose. But, the future isn't so friendly when he doesn't have his comfortable past to retreat to. His loner ways won't keep him alive, he needs to build a community, but who can he trust? This should happen around chapter 10

He's built a small, hidden empire, and he's afraid people will take advantage of him.

Harold must devise a way to safely seek out the help he needs, without sacrificing the security he's built.

APOCALYPTIC SOCIETY

The future is a place where everyone is expected to comply. The name for it is "consensus" but there is nothing voluntary about it. The blockchain is used to record votes and opinions about a wide variety of issues. Those whose opinions are too far outside the norm, are considered "non compliant" or "noncoms" if they are considered mentally competent, they'll be taken in for reconditioning, until they comply. Those that don't are banished outside of society.

Those that aren't able to comply, for whatever reason, aren't expected to contribute, or take an assigned job. Instead, they are given assistance at a very low level. They live in an underground society, since their assistance isn't enough to afford anything else.

Some of the banished manage to make their way into this underground. If they move above ground, they have to appear to be "nonnies" (non compliants who are not mentally competent)

OTHER CHARACTERS

Molly

Molly is a girl that Pete sees when he travels out into the world in his future life. She appears to be a nonnie, but offers to help Harold.

Malcolm

Malcolm is Harold's neighbor in the present. He starts to wonder about Harold's behavior and finally forces Harold's decision to live in the future. Crisis comes in chapter 10

Pascal

Pascal is Harold's small dog. He starts out living only in his future life, but somehow makes the transition, causing Harold to question the reality of his timeline. Pascal makes the transition in chapter 8 or 9.

The incidents mentioned here will be a part of the storyline. I've left them vague, because I want authors to have a chance to add their own touches. Please note the chapter placement on each.

As we work, each author will no doubt, add details to the story. I'd ask that each chapter be accompanied by a glossary, or appendix, of sorts, explaining any new story elements that will need to be carried on. We can add these to a "story bible" which should include: characters, items that might not exist in our current time, politics, systems, or ideas that don't exist in the present.

Try to describe them in as much detail as you can.

That's it for now! Look for the first chapter tomorrow and be ready to write your submissions!

Another way to play along! Not a writer, but you'd like to be a part? Great! We need curators!

Here's how it will work!

Participate as much as you can in upvoting posts, resteeming the story, commenting on the main posts, or chapters. Every day, we'll have a drawing for some SBD! If you'd like to win it, get busy and share the story! You can start with this post and the original announcement.

You can also help pick which chapter comes next by voting on submitted chapters!

Sort:

Looking forward to participating. I might get busy and consider a chapter!

Well, be sure you wait to see how it opens. I'll expect each chapter to fit neatly to be chosen. But, there will be several opportunities.

Sounds interesting. How fast is this little project going to go?

Never mind. I found the info in the earlier post.

Perfect! Thank you ;) I'm going to post this in all the the contest channels I know ;)

Sounds fun. Good idea. Will participate. Thanks for messaging me.

A thousand words seems like a good challenge

Hi!!! Excellent project, I ll participate soon! Upvoted! I follow you and resteem this post. Soon I ll send you my contribution. Thanks for upvoting my last post! Have a nice day and lets keep in contact!

Sounds like a very interesting project. I won't be able to participate, already working on some other interesting projects at the moment, but wishing you all the best. Will be interesting to see how this will turn out, and if it will work out the way you intend.

For me, being a co-author would mean to be more on an equal footing from the start, so I don't think this approach would really work to get my best work there. But then, there are many different ways, so wish you all the best in your endeavor!
