Pretty much, unfortunately, it is currently the only consistent gate to the bigger resources.
I know, it's just unfortunate that I'd like to find good stuff to read and have to sift through page after page after page of complete and udder crap before I find that rare nugget of gold. =\
If you curate your own feed properly you should find some consistently good authors
I actually have a better system in place. Follow someone that writes content that I enjoy reading, then I look at who they're following and see what kind of stuff they're posting and the chain goes on.
That's kind of what I meant. The trending category is about as valid as trending media in the real world. LOL
Or the trending tab on YouTube xD
