Richard Warren (1583-1628) was one of the passengers on the Pilgrim ship Mayflower.
In December 1620 their first encounter with Indians and did not turn out well, as they learned that slow-firing muskets were no match for rapid-fire arrows. This Indian challenge to the Pilgrims was later known as the "First Encounter"
Joseph Warren was a key planner of the Boston Tea Party, working closely with the Sons of Liberty and the North End Caucus to challenge British taxation.
Warren oversaw colonial militia matters and dispatched Paul Revere on his iconic midnight ride before fighting heroically and losing his life at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Lieutenant James Drew, the commander of the sloop-of-war HMS Scorpion, went to Breed's Hill "a day or two" after the battle and exhumed Warren's corpse, "spit in his face, jumped on his stomach, and at last cut off his head and committed every act of violence upon his body.
Warren's body was exhumed 10 months after his death by his brothers and Paul Revere, who identified the remains by an artificial tooth Warren had installed in his jaw.
When news of the battle spread through the colonies, it was reported as a colonial loss, as the ground had been taken by the enemy, and significant casualties were incurred, George Washington was on his way to Boston as the new commander of the Continental Army.
