IBM's philanthropic arm of computational science has launched a new project called OpenPandemics, the aim is to search for potential cures, at first for COVID-19, but also to provide a method to spin-up research on any mutations of the disease which may follow soon after the initial pandemic is over.

The work is processed by volunteers on their home computer equipment, it appears there are WU's (Work Units) for PC, Linux and Android (phones and Raspberry Pi's). If you arent familiar with BOINC its the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, its a clever system the binds 100,000s of volunteer computers together into one of the worlds largest supercomputers by processing power. The critical part is that because the infrastructure is free to the research project, science that normally would not be funded or could not gain super-compute time, gets a method to be processed.

OpenPandemics will run a virtual laboratory testing 100,000s of potential drugs against models of the virus, and make the results public. This then allows other scientists to take the most promising drug candidates and test them in the real world. This significantly accelerates research, what BOINC can do in months would take years to do in the lab.

Join BOINC, World Community Grid and OpenPandemics today, and maybe you might just help to bring the COVID-19 virus under control. Even if you dont, every drug you eliminate as a candidate is still valuable information for science.

These projects have massive potential. I was running some years ago when PCs were much less powerful. The GPU ones are incredibly powerful. Hope they can do a lot of good. I am just running the Dreamlab COVID project on my phone at night.

I love that these types of efforts arent about heros, just ordinary people making small adjustments and maybe something amazing comes from it.
