Influenza on the uptick this year.

Flu circulation is still generally low compared to pre-pandemic circulation, but I still think it would be wise to get the Flu vaccine this year. We are seeing more circulation at this point in the season than we saw this time last year. Many locations are offering the Flu vaccine with your coronavirus vaccine booster to make it even more convenient (it is safe to get them at the same time).

The pandemic mitigation significantly reduced global Flu circulation. So much so the B/Yamagata lineage and the H3N2 clade 3c3.a are virtually gone.

Here you can see current global Flu circulation compared to previous years. The most recent two months have had more circulation than we've seen thus far this pandemic, but still below average circulation. I think as coronavirus mitigation eases and travel resumes Flu circulation will increase. It is too early to say what the 2021-2022 Flu season will look like in the US. The season has variable start and end times, as early as this month to as late as May, but typically peak months are December-February. Though as we have seen with RSV the pandemic might change the typical seasonality patterns.

The Flu vaccine is one of the safest vaccines available, and while it isn't as effective as the coronavirus vaccines it still significantly reduces your risk of hospitalization and death. With the coronavirus pandemic still active it would not be good to end up in the hospital for Flu or god forbid a co-infection with SARS-COV-2 and influenza.
