You have to factor in the availability of the tests. It used to take 4 days to get a test. Soon there will be a portable device that can give results in less than 15 minutes.
Also, a lot of people will never be tested, because they won't show or have minimal symptoms.
Therefor, I think the numbers are increasing due to people who are actually getting more tests.

How does the math work once you factor in those factors ? Do we still hit 6.4 Billion cases by May 09 ?
The cases have to peak and then start dropping. It is only increasing at the rate due to increase of tests.
Maybe if they stop testing there will be no more cases .... and life will get back to normal.
