I Want To Build A Free Creative Commons Image Library On Steemit: Looking For Solutions

this is my photocollage of a neighbor boy and some caves i visited in Missouri

@team @ned @dantheman:

I have a really good idea for Steemit that would be beneficial to both the Steemit community and marketing efforts:

BUILD A KICK ASS CREATIVE COMMONS IMAGE LIBRARY THAT'S FREE FOR MEMBERS TO USE.

This could be a really good resource that would benefit everyone in the Steemit community.
My images would be free to use for whatever purpose, and to make it even easier, it would be Creative Commons within the Steemit community. I guess the only thing I'd like to have a restriction on are the users. All Steemit members get free access and can use the images for personal and commercial uses, but if you're not a member of Steemit, you're not allowed to use it? (still working on this idea...)

Here's my problem: you/we would need to create a location on Steemit for this. I'm thinking we need, at some point, an area within Steemit called "RESOURCES" so that our resources don't get lost on threads. We need a Newbie Resource Area, too. I'm guessing you're already thinking about this?

If you can give me an idea if this is possible to create a Creative Commons area, where we can put our free gifts to the community, that would be great. The gift economy can thrive, I believe in here. I'm willing to start on this as I make photographs on a consistent basis, and I'm just a bit tired of my art sitting either in my phone or computer.

The gift economy is closely related to the mission of this website which values contributions, sharing, and a lessening of central control. The gift economy was responsible for humans evolving for millennia, with the tribe leaders, in the past being selected based on how much they gave the tribe members. The opposite seems to be true today, with the most powerful being the ones who take the most. It's backwards from the first humans............anyway...

I need your help in figuring this out as I definitely have the energy and drive to make this a reality.

Here's a photo I took of the Joplin tornado. It's like Salvador Dali meets The Wizard Of Oz! I didn't do any photoshop, as that clock just was perched that way. It's really weird, and it would be in the Steemit Creative Commons.......if I can figure out how to make this a reality......help?

If we're going to have a new paradigm, we need a new image library that is mind-blowing!

Sort:

Probably would be best to store the images using IPFS.

I recently installed Piwigo on my server specifically for the purpose of having somewhere to host images for me to use here (mainly because imgur doesn't allow embeds) and as I've been using it so far, it seems like something that could work really well for what you're describing.

Ok what do I do? I don't have a server. Do I need to get one? My computer is old but I'm planning on getting a new one, Apple as that's best for me. How can I get that system you mentioned?

Well Piwigo may not be the absolute best choice, but it seems like it would be an easy way to add a gallery for people to grab images from. You can check out the way I have it set up here if you want. Perhaps something like what @cass suggested can be worked out for a steemit.com/resources link to be added. I just really like the idea of a user-currated section for CC images and such that can be used with posts. Hopefully enough items would be on it that we wouldn't see the same four images used across every post. If it was some kind of repository where every image posted got added to a list, it could be worthwhile.

And where on this site would they be located? Meaning, a new area would be necessary. In essence I'd be hosting the images on my own server? I would need to back them up somewhere in case something happened.

As to where it would be hosted, I'd definitely suggest it either being on the steemit servers as another service or under a separate domain like steemitresources.com or something, but either way it should be hosted by someone who has a server or by an actual web server hosting site.

The good part is there is already a new logo font selection ready now, for anyone who wants to create amazing pics for steemit. They just posted this today: https://steemit.com/steem/@team/icon-font-for-steem-update

thanks. my concept goes a little further than just creating marketing stuff for Steemit.
What I'm proposing is creating a creative commons image library for all of us to use, in our personal ives, businesses, posts, whatever.
Finding high quality images is hard, and most carry some sort of restriction/copyright.
I'm not a fan of copyright as i feel it hinders growth and human evolution.
I'm looking for a way to build an image library within steemit, initially for the Steemit community and then
eventually, it could be used by everyone.....that's my goal, i guess.

but if you're not a member of Steemit, you're not allowed to use it?

this is bad idea .... why not true Creative Commons.
if people like the art some will sign up and up vote, others won't , thats just the way free software is. do not change.

but i do love the idea of steemit for posting Creative Commons arts.
when i was playing around with blender i used http://www.blendswap.com/ alot and would of been nice if i could tip with a upvote.

you are right. I had a bad idea. yes, make it true Creative Commons, free for everyone to use...
I'm still de-programming myself. Thanks for the insight.
i messed around with blender, but i mostly suck at it.
Come to think of it, i use mostly open-source software for everything, except Enlight, which i cannot live without.

Here's my problem: you/we would need to create a location on Steemit for this. I'm thinking we need, at some point, an area within Steemit called "RESOURCES" so that our resources don't get lost on threads. We need a Newbie Resource Area, too. I'm guessing you're already thinking about this?

I really like that idea .. just imagine if we go a step further then and there would be a small button on top of the editor here where u would able to choose images/illustration/wallpapers/icons and much more (steemit centric) like templates out of area RESOURCES

Yes! That way belonging to Steemit you have resources beyond your wildest dream and that would set us apart from other social media sites. You could also use the images for your own commercial purposes outside of Steemit. It's like Steemit becomes the open source village that the Internet was supposed to be.
I believe in the power of the commons.
You see, I could have set up my own cc image library on my own website but for me personally, that individualistic thinking isn't any fun for me. My energy lies in sharing, and it always has. I was raised in a community where sharing was the norm. On some level I want to recreate that in a digital world, the true gift economy that never quite took off.
Even if some big Corp decided to use my image for their lousy ad campaign I wouldn't care or sue. I'd spin the story in my own way....

How do we make it happen?

Awesome idea!
