When I Lost Control

"He drew one from a silver case, holding it between his fingers. Bringing it to his lips, he rested one hand on the desk—where I usually write—while slipping his other hand into the pocket of his elegant suit, searching for a lighter. When he pulled it out, it was a black Zippo. He flipped the cap open with a soft click, struck the flint, and lit his cigarette. He began to smoke, wearing a conceited smile, before blowing the smoke high into the air. Clearing his throat, he looked at me, and his gaze pierced right through my heart.
'Won't you just let me out of your head? I want to breathe inside a novel.'
Panic seized me; my lips tensed, and my heart hammered like a woodpecker.Taking a leap of courage, I asked him:'Why should I? You belong exactly where you are; it suits me.'
He raised an eyebrow, flicked some ash into a crystal ashtray, and replied:'I’ve read your dark thoughts.'
'Really? And what’s wrong with that?!'He flashed a mocking smile. Bringing the cigarette to his lips once more, he took a short drag, then exhaled while slightly curling his lower lip upward.

'You are too weak to speak of them.'The moment he finished his sentence, his features hardened, and his gaze turned to stone. He stepped closer to me, extinguished his cigarette right in my coffee, locked his eyes with mine in a defiance, and added:'And I am too strong to remain silent.'"

I'm standing in front of a brief fragment but one that is extremely dense in symbolic charge. At first glance, it seems like the scene of a literary character who comes to life and confronts its author. But if we read between the lines, the text is much more than an ingenious dialogue: it's a power duel between the creation and the creator, between the repressed and consciousness, between desire and internal censorship.

There are several subtle but key points that let me affirm this:

  • The silver cigarette case: elegance, coldness, a noble metal that holds something which is consumed.

  • The black Zippo: black as the hidden, as what is not named. The lighter is the spark, the detonator. It's not just any lighter; it's an iconic, almost cinematic object.

  • The desk "where I usually write": the author's sacred territory. He invades it with his hand, leans on it naturally. It's a symbolic appropriation of the creative space. He doesn't just come out of the text: he installs himself in the place where the text is produced.

  • The coffee put out with the cigarette: this gesture is brutal. He doesn't put the cigarette out in an ashtray; he puts it out in her coffee. It's an intimate desecration.

  • The gaze is the connecting thread. He "pierces her with his gaze," "locks his eyes onto hers." You describe the panic with a visceral image: "my heart hammered like a woodpecker." It's not an elegant metaphor; it's a physical, almost painful image. It's your own body responding to a presence you don't control.

...There's a huge amount to unpack in this work, but I'll stop here😌. It simply strikes me as a defiant stroke of genius, one that leads me to wonder how much would remain on the plane of fiction, or whether it might be some kind of disguised anecdote...?🤔

Thank you for sharing a good post with us.
