The award is named on Late Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India in tenure from 1984 to 1989. This award is given after carefully watching the players performance for consecutive 4 years. The 12 member panel judges the players performance in 12 different sports to select them for this prestigious award
This award was started to promote the exclusive club of players for their extra ordinary efforts in their respective field. This award is also very crucial for Virat Kohli because he is only the 3rd Indian cricketer after greats of Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendar Singh Dhoni in a nation of cricket with almost approx. 90 years of official cricket playing history.
