Today, the wine scene of Croatia has dramatically improved in relation to the period from ten to fifteen years ago. One of the major causes lies in serious investment in knowledge and modern technology by large wineries that are just in the second wave of privatization, which ended up in the hands of serious investors who entered the wine business with the intent to invest rather than dump the money out of it. These wineries have enabled today's supermarkets to buy decent wines at very affordable prices. Grain is, of course, the queen of that category, but neither the basic malvasia or the debt and the grubbing-up, nor the Franconian, the merlot or the blue among the black wines. Another important cause is the new generation of young and educated winemakers in countless smaller, family wineskins across the country. New generations of young men and young women from wine-growing families have not decided to flee for another activity during the six-month-olds, but are hungry to celebrate family business that will one day inherit. They have been educating at agronomic faculties or at educational establishments in their regions. They have been studying world-wide recipes for the success of famous international wineries. They have often trained in them all over the world, from New Zealand and Australia, across Italy and France to California and Chile. Ultimately, in their own families, they introduced a new spirit of optimism and ambition, and prompted the necessary changes to bring the wines from the ruthless targs to the most prestigious ones, destined for vinotheques and restaurants. Today, Croatia offers both quality and balanced wine regions in both market segments. In the supermarket, reliability, variety and good quality, and in restaurants and other catering activities, fine, authenticity, versatility and excellence.
