Antivirus Software: Does Antivirus Software Really Work?

Antivirus software is something we have all become accustomed to and is often the first bit of software we install on a new computer. Once a potential threat has been discovered, the antivirus software will often hold the suspicious file in a quarantine and wait for the user to investigate, rather than automatically deleting the file, just in case it's a false positive.

Usually these techniques combine to form an effective defensive against most of the malicious files found in the wild. However, while most modern day antivirus is highly effective, no antivirus software is able to protect you completely using these three techniques alone.
