Antivirus Software: Does Antivirus Software Really Work?

Antivirus software is something we have all become accustomed to and is often the first bit of software we install on a new computer. We know we need to have it in order to protect our systems against malicious software such as viruses, worms and trojan horses, as well as spyware and other types of unwanted programs, but do we know what our antivirus software is doing as we while away the hours working on our computers?

Essentially, antivirus software checks your computer programs and files by comparing them to known viruses and types of malware. It will also scan your computer for any behaviour that may seem out of place and indicate infection by new, unknown threat. Antivirus software does this by utilising three scanning techniques as part of its detection processes:

  • Signature Detection – This compares the files and programs and on a system to known malware to see if there is a match.

  • Generic Detection – This technique looks for malware is similar to, or possibly a variation of known malware.

  • Heuristic Detection – This process looks for un-usual behaviour, such as new programs trying to save data in protected or uncommon locations.

Once a potential threat has been discovered, the antivirus software will often hold the suspicious file in a quarantine and wait for the user to investigate, rather than automatically deleting the file, just in case it's a false positive.

Usually these techniques combine to form an effective defensive against most of the malicious files found in the wild. However, while most modern day antivirus is highly effective, no antivirus software is able to protect you completely using these three techniques alone.

Given the increasing complexity and sophistication of today's networks and corresponding cyber attackers, the techniques that served users well in the past need updating if users are to remain safe in the coming years.

Enter LevelNet – the next generation cyber security threat management solution

All of the major antivirus products have their own proprietary techniques and detection methods, made up of a blend and variation of the methods listed above, but users of LevelNet get the benefit of them all! In fact, you won't even need any other antivirus software on your system - everything is already secured within the LevelNet network, with each user sharing their virus detection data in real time, via a secure protocol in real time. Resulting in everyone being protected from an emerging threat as soon as it appears.

LevelNet will build its own threat detection database, and these threats are then converted into signatures and added to the LevelNet threat detection system. LevelNet is then able to check if the vulnerabilities exist across the subscribed client base networks and infrastructure. LevelNet users then get alerted to any potential threat present on their system, even if a pre-installed antivirus product hasn't detected it.

Where viruses and malware exist, the end user will be notified immediately so that corrective action can be taken.

With this combination of advanced features, end users and enterprises that unleash the power of LevelNet on their networks can feel confident in being protected by a true, next generation cyber security threat management solution.
