I have to hand to Vitalik. He is a pretty righteous dude. He’s taking a pass on this year’s grand hoity-toity blockchain event, which would’ve surely secured him gobs more funding for whatever he damn well desires if he did attend. Instead, Vitalik sent out a tweetstorm a couple days ago with 4 reasons why he’s taking a pass on Consensus 2018. 1. “I am boycotting @coindesk’s Consensus 2018 conference this year, and strongly encourage others to do the same. Here is my reasoning why. Coindesk is recklessly complicit in enabling giveaway scams. See their latest article on OMG, which *directly links* to a giveaway scam.” @ VitalikButerin
The article did have a link in it that lead to a giveaway scam, which CoinDesk later updated. But c’mon, CoinDesk should’ve checked it out before anyone had to lose their OMG.
2. “Their coverage of EIP 999 was terrible. They published a highly sensationalist article claiming the chain would split, when it was very clear that EIP 999 was *very far* from acceptance. This is why pundits need to be replaced by prediction markets, ASAP.” @ VitalikButerin
Apparently CoinDesk made it seem like Ethereum devs where on the brink of a blockchain split to free up over 500,000 ETH that have been frozen for months. They aren’t. And they seem a long way away from agreement on the subject.
3. “Their reporting policies are designed to trap you with gotchas. Did you know that if you send them a reply, and you explicitly say that some part is off the record, that's explicitly on the record unless you go through a request/approve dance first?” @ VitalikButerin
I guess “off the record” means post it ASAP unless you go through some process. Then maybe after said process, they will make it “off the record.” Seems a little too late to me.
4. “And by the way, the conference costs $2-3k to attend. I refuse to personally contribute to that level of rent seeking.” @ VitalikButerin
So much for crypto and blockchain leveling the playing field for all investors. $2-3k to attend? That can buy you a nice, big bag of ADA, XLM or whatever coin or token you fancy. So, just maybe, you can buy a house one day or maybe put your kids through college without you or them accumulating a shit ton of debt.
