MEDIBLOC; An open-source healthcare data platform built on the blockchain

in #crypto6 years ago (edited)

Medibloc is not an option in healthcare anymore, it is becoming a need.

Do you own your own personal healthcare information?
I don't think so!
Today i want to talk to you about Medibloc, a decentralized healthcare information ecosystem built on blockchain technology for patients, healthcare providers and researchers.
Here is a video i personally created that shows what MediBloc is offering its participants

TEAM

image (1).png
Medibloc was founded by Dr. Allen Wookyun Kho, who is a lead software engineer at Samsung electronics. He is a dental surgeon. He had his D.M.D in dental medicine, Kyunghee University. He has a Masters in Science in Computer Science at Columbia University and also a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science as KAIST.
Cofounded by Dr. Eunsol Lee who is a software engineer and a certified physician in Biomedical informatics. He is board-certified in Radiology and has a Masters degree in Medicine from Hanyang University.
The other team members' portfolio can find on the website
The cool thing about this team is that most of them are actually masters in this field, they know what they are doing in this field, they are professional, they are not just technologists who think they can just come into somebody else's field and change everything

MEDIBLOC AND THE PROBLEM MEDIBLOC IS SOLVING

I have personally had the problem of going to a hospital, doing a bunch of tests, and then having that same problem later on, and going to another hospital and then they don't have the information from the other hospital, so they have to do the exact same test over again, which is just a waste of time, money and might even cause a detriment to your health because very critical information about your health might be missed in the new hospital.
I will give an instance;
I recently went to a new dentist, and i had to redo all the x-rays on my teeth which is a big annoyance, i really hate doing that, putting all those different things in my mouth makes me feel terrible not forgetting the fact that i had done that same x-ray with another dentist a few months ago. So using this blockchain, i know that i won't have to do any of that again because all the information needed from the x-ray will be on the blockchain. So not only will i have access to the information, i will also have access to my health records to know for myself, to be proactive on my own in regards to my health information. So this is a win-win situation because my first dentist will have access to the information and if i transferred to a new dentist, they can have access to the same information smoothly, seamlessly and not in a 30 days waiting period.
Medibloc is providing a solution to the infrastrusture of how everything in the medical field functions, from the health care records, to your personal access to health, to the problem of being able to take your medical records and transfer them from one hospital to another. So everything is bugged down, everything is slow, everything is just not efficient

The biggest issue in the health care industry asides vulnerability to attacks is data silo, and one of the biggest things that Medibloc attempts to solve is trying to help have that data all in one place that its easily accessible and can be transferred between patients and hospitals easily with the patients having total control over their data. In order words, Medibloc aims to share all of the medical information with everybody in one general place while their information is also being protected. It can safely secure and integrate scattered data from various institutions, and also collect data from devices like the smart phone.

Patients can manage their personal medical records based on individual needs, setting grounds for exercising ownership and control over personal medical records

source whitepaper

You can actually control who has access to your medical records, and you can give them permission to look at them or even permission to modify your medical record, and for me, that is a big deal because people want to be able to see their own information about them and they want to be able to control what others can do with it especially when it comes to healthcare

REAL TIME PATIENT DATABASE

Medical records can be absolutely enormous data-wise.
Just imagine an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) that can take gigabytes of information, this doesn't mean that your latest scans will be stored on this blockchain, its going to be stored inside of a database and that database is going to be distributed where the medical community can request for your Medibloc ID and also permission to view it and the summary of your information is being displayed all at your discretion. Your MRI scan is given to you and time and money is being saved. This will really help the doctors and healthcare providers access that data. Also imagine you are in an emergency situation or in a different country and you get injured, and they want your medical records, well this will be one way that can actually happen because they want to bring together the medical records from multiple healthcare providers. In order words, they want to aggregate the information, so that doctors and healthcare providers can see it and access it in a far easier way than is currently available. Everything is sped up and made easier for healthcare providers while also providing you with the security of your data plus you will be able to see it

TOKEN MODEL

Medibloc issues Medi tokens (MED),following the QRC token standard(the Qtum token standard that corresponds to
Ethereum ERC20). This is the main source of socio-economic exchange in the Medibloc platform
If you look through the whitepaper, you would see some of their plans for their long term and short term goals.
MEDIBLOC-TOKENS.png
I noticed something interesting, i saw another token there called medipoint. Now before you disregard medibloc entirely because of this,

medipoint is just a point based system which measures participation on the platform and provides reputation on the medibloc ecosystem and medipoint is not transferable outside of the medibloc platform. Its just a reference point for patients to select the right medical practitioner

source whitepaper

So MEDs can be used outside the platform while MPs can only be used on MediBlock.

The meditoken will feature both healthcare and patient generated data. After all since it's on the blockchain, it's going to be verifiable and not available for manipulation by users.

What are the incentives for holding this token

Medibloc users are going to be incentivised for their contributions specifically to the platform. They plan to reward participants ranging from patients to health care providers with that coin

What is the value of the coin

You can use that coin to complete transactions for both medical and pharmaceutical expenses, and you can also pay your insurance premiums with it.
Aside from using it to pay for transactions, it also is much much bigger than that because by adding the blockchain to the hospital's infrastructure you are allowing for the transactions of data across the servers throughout the hospitals to be both anonymous and transparent.

HOW CAN MEDICINE GROW THROUGH MEDIBLOC

Since a hospital would be able to communicate and send information to the next hospital, when you are transferring your health records that comes into play when a doctor goes to research the different symptoms that a patient presents. So if for example, a patient goes in and says i am feeling sick this way or that way, one of the things that the doctor will do is that they go to their computers and they type in the different symptoms into their database and a host of different possible sicknesses comes up, and while this data is being shared across hospitals, the sample size and data itself grows. So by sample size growing, the research can grow and when the research grows, because its no longer restricted to a small sample size, that allows medicine to grow exponentially because of the increase of sample size and people using it.
So this has so many far reaching implications.

MEDIBLOC PARTNERSHIP

With MediBloc having establish partnership with these renowned major companies, it is certain that the MediBloc platform would have an overwhelming reach.

I was so glad when i read this article. The article talks about medibloc officially entering into a partnership with Kyung Hee University Medical Center specifically their Dental Hospital, the third largest hospital in Korea on January 18th, 2018.

They agreed that the two parties will mutually cooperate on the medical data management of the Kyung Hee Dental Examination Center and work together to provide a high standard dental service to the hospital’s patients through MediBloc’s personal health record platform. They are committed to it and are already beginning to implement it. This is huge because now their working product will now be implemented. As we all know that doing anything within the science or medical community, everything one is doing has to be grounded in truth, has to be grounded in fact and has to work. So this will allow their product to be tested if its valuable or not. And if it is valuable like i personally believe it is, then it is going to explode across the industry from one hospital to another, as i earlier mentioned, this hospital is the third biggest hospital in South Korea and i believe they are taking major strides forward in that regard.

Companies from other industries are partnering as well. Deloitte, an internationally recognized accounting firm has also partnered with MediBloc!

On May 11, MediBloc and Deloitte Anjin LLC signed a strategic partnership agreement to reinforce blockchain-based businesses and technology.
Deloitte, a global leader in the field of accounting and consulting, has formed a startup consulting group in Korea last year and plans to develop and support promising blockchain startups. Through this business and tech partnership with MediBloc, a leading company in the blockchain field, Deloitte aims to assess the blockchain market and build a successful case of blockchain-based projects.

They are really moving very fast. Currently their major focus is on South Korea, but i believe they said they have plans on making their platform accessible worldwide which would be great.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF PEOPLE HAVING FULL CONTROL OVER THEIR MEDICAL RECORDS

Only you know your current address, only you know your emergency contacts only you know your allergies, only you know what medications you are taking, a doctor only knows what's been prescribed. Since its your medical record, you should be in control.
With this blockchain operating within the hospitals, now you have the ability to use and develop different apps and other stuff within their blockchain and use them from different hospitals, giving you more room to utilize your health care ideas making you more active in your own health care.

The need to control your medical records

The 3rd leading cause of death in my country is preventable medical errors.
Its also estimated that 250,000+ Americans die each year due to a mistake which is one person every two minutes. This is happening mainly because of a lack of information or misinformation. You go to a specialist or surgeon, and he doesn't have your medical history. One doctor doesn't know what another had prescribed, and there is a negative reaction or someone had an emergency and the medical response team have no idea what you they are allergic to or what medication you are on.
A Case Study; My Aunt
Beatrice was her name. She was the kindest most loving person i have ever met. She was 70, she lived in South Africa and she has 5 beautiful grand children. She was not doing bad for someone who was in her 70's. She had a few heart problems but nothing too serious and she actually wanted to live long enough to see her great-grand children. Unfortunately her dreams never come through because she died a couple of months ago.
On November 17th, 2017, Beatrice was gardening when she started feeling unwell. Her children called for the emergency teams to take her to the hospital of which they did.
The news was not good because Beatrice was suffering from severe heart failure and she needed to go into surgery straight away. She had the surgery which lasted for hours. After the surgery, Beatrice recovered spectacularly well, the whole medical team were very happy. They actually told her she could go back home in a couple of weeks.
A few days after, Beatrice developed a urinary disease which is very common in hospitals because a lot of people get these infections. The doctor prescribed penicillin which is a standard antibiotic given for this infection.
But one thing they didn't know was that Beatrice was severely allergic to penicillin which led to her dying of anaphylactic shock
I am not writing this because i want i want you to feel sad, i am telling this story because in Beatrice' medical records,
there was a clear note stating that she was severely allergic to penicillin, but no one saw it or really cared, so nothing was done to prevent her death from happening.
Now trying to rewrite her story, on the November 17th, 2017, when she started feeling unwell.
If she had signed up to Medibloc, a platform that allows one to share medical data to whom they choose, it also compiles a complete indexed history of all patient medical information; validating and securing every change along the day, she would have lived longer than she did.
When the medical team arrived, since Beatrice was a bit old and knew she might have some health issues afterwards, sharing her medical information with the medical teams wouldn't have been a problem, and these medical records would have stated that she was allergic to penicillin and no one would have prescribed Beatrice penicillin after her surgery. Beatrice would have been given another antibiotic which would have lead to her recovery and afterwards return to her children and finally get to fulfill her dream of see her great grand children.

HOW IS DIGITAL MEDICAL DATA STORAGE ON THE BLOCKCHAIN SUPERIOR TO TRADITIONAL MEDICAL DATA STORAGE METHODS?

Robustness: Medical data storage on the blockchain will be tamper proof, once recorded the transactions can't be altered unlike traditional medical storage methods
Decentralization: It requires no central administrator since blockchain transactions contain their own proof of validity and their own proof of authorization. It is now patient centered because the patient now owns his or her medical records.
Security: The centralized medical records systems can suffer hacks and attacks. They do not carry the same level of security that the blockchain has. See below

SUMMARY OF MEDIBLOC

  • Open-source healthcare data platform built on the blockchain.
  • Compiles a complete indexed history of all patient medical information
  • Secures and integrates information from various institutions
  • Collection of data from devices like smartphones
  • Patients manage their personal medical records
    • Patients have access to their own data
    • Patients can authorize who can write to their Medibloc
  • Can help reduce health insurance fraud
  • API and SDKs for developers
This is basically the solution the medical industry, the biggest industry on the face of the earth has been needing for quite sometime.
