The way I see it - making the assumption that merge is a success - eth will be the layer providing functionality and security but layer 2s with rollups probably will play a role when things that need high scalability (but is not necessary to interact with layer 1 eth all the time) get utilized a lot. For example gaming where ppl can / need to make a lot of transactions on layer 2 but for example only gaming items (nfts), prices, results and such are rolled to layer 1 eth. Which could be quite practical. I have only started to look in to the topic, there are some interesting projects with zk-rollups besides matic (like zksync, starknet, optimism). I don't like the "optimistic" ones by design. But then again I have been using Immutable X while gaming and it seems to do decent job already. So who knows, we will see. But not really eth guy so I don't really look to hodl eth, just to have some is always practical. Not looking to safe bets either but there certainly could be some projects with high potential (eventually adoption will decide but from trading perspective there can be good fomo effects on projects like these once we are back on track).
