Note that Steve Jobs showed the world that there is a definite place for some centralized decision making (after accumulating all the advantages that the Woz's open source methods could acquire)
Apple was then able to act with great dexterity and precision with regard to integrity, security, the ability to negotiate and so many factors. Rule by committee is always an awkward predicament.
