I have a top of the line gaming laptop with a gtx 970m graphics card that I only use for about 8 hours a day. How much would you expect I can make if I mine it for the remaining 16 hours a day?

It really depends on which crypto you are mining in relation to return.
Any mining pool you join should have a built in calculator on the dashboard which you will able to enter your full spec & calculate your return .

You should get core speeds of about 900mhz +-3% with a gtx 970m gpu
It would depend wbat crpyto you are mining but it should provide a decent return over time
You can mine constantly on minergate.com with your hardware running
