Give it a try, as there's nothing lost by opening a free ProtonMail account and seeing how it works for you. I think it's a great alternative to gmail, but if you are a heavy gmail user there may be features that ProtonMail doesn't have.
The greatest feature of ProtonMail is the end-to-end encryption between ProtonMail users. Gmail doesn't have that and even states in their terms of service that using encryption with a free gmail account isn't allowed.
