Who want a free Ledger nano S? Thinking about SECURITY from the crypto valley 🇨🇭

Hey Steemers,
I fell in love with the Ledger hard wallet! It is vey important to secure your earnings and staying informed.

I own both a Trezor and a Ledger Nano S, so I thought I would give a quick comparison of the two. I will talk about what I like and dislike about both of them. Both of them are great devices and will keep your bitcoin secure, but they both have different aspects that are better than the other.

Trezor

Pros:

  • Better wallet software (You can label transactions and sync them to Dropbox)
  • Ability to create an infinite number of hidden accounts by using passwords on top of the seed
  • Password manager available (Encrypt all of your password accounts with a different bitcoin keypair)
  • U2F support
    Cons:
  • When recovering wallet from seed, you must type your words on the computer keyboard (out-of-order, but still)
  • Screen not protected
  • More expensive (~$99 USD)

Ledger Nano S

Pros:

  • Screen/device protected by metal swivel cover
  • Ethereum support available now (Trezor apparently supports Ethereum, but no wallet exists yet to incorporate it)
  • 3rd-Party apps can run from device
  • U2F support
  • When recovering wallet from seed, the whole process can be done from the device without even connecting it to a computer!
  • Fairly inexpensive (~$65 USD)
    Cons:
  • Not as advanced wallet software (no transaction labeling)
  • No ability to create hidden accounts
  • No password manager

I have used both of these devices for a while and like things about both of them. I think if I were to recommend just one of them to someone, I would go with the Ledger Nano S. I love that you can restore the wallet from seed completely disconnected from a computer (you still need power, but doesn't have to be from a computer). It doesn't have hidden accounts or a password manager yet, but I have heard that both of those are in the works. If anyone has any questions about the two devices I would love to answer them for you!

I bought them both online directly from each company. Both companies take bitcoin, which is what I used to buy them.

By the way, I am giving away free Ledger in this shortage to the person that will mostly brainstorm about Security in this crypto wave!

How do you think security will evolve in respect to crypto/wallet and smart contract t in the future?

Looking forward to your though. I believe in this reactive steem community! Stay tuned for the next posts. I would like to show you what my daily routine is!

cheers from Switzerland 🇨🇭 🇨🇭 🇨🇭

Thank you for taking the time to properly compare the two devices. I am an indentured Ledger user (2 x Nano S, 1 x Nano) and was interested to see Trezor's additional features.

Although I would like to contribute ideas to your article, I am not an expert on application security. To my mind, the biggest threats to crypto security are:

  1. Established payment processors marginalising bitcoin through press-release to the mainstream media, and henceforth poisoning public opinion.
  2. Bugs and opportunities in forthcoming/ongoing altcoin implementations, including the addition of payment channels (Segwit/Raiden) and POS implementations.

Where I can see hardware wallets headed - I feel like the chaps who have an interest in making the 25$ smartphones (like Humaniq purport to be doing, but swathes have attempted this before now, like Microsoft and Mozilla) will be integrating a security element MORE SIMILAR IN PROFILE to a SIM card/debit card, than using fallible biometrics (again, like Humaniq purport to do.) What I imagine, is instead of Ledger making a secure element device to plug into a smartphone, I see the smartphone manufacturers settling on a standard for a secure element "card" for integration of cryptographic functions, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, cryptocurrencies.
